A classical music workshop for kids, in the White House. Yes!

November 10, 2009 at 7:19 PM

My friend and colleague, Circe Diaz, a cellist and graduate of El Sistema in Venezuela, forwarded me this video because one of her students is participating in this program. What a great opportunity for a young musician! (Double-click the video to start. Single-click to pause.)

Cool.  Always wonderful to see kids excited about playing an instrument.

I couldn't get the video to play.  Can anyone give me some advice or a link?

I actually take my violin lessons at the Neighborhood Music School in New Haven where 18 kids were selected to participate in this event. From what I've seen, this school is a gem and provides many, many children who otherwise would not be able to afford lessons the opportunity to learn a wide range of musical instruments along with performance, dance, and theater. In my opinion, this tremendous opportunity was well deserved.

And for those of you in areas in which the other schools are located, in this time of huge cutbacks in the arts, if you can possibly do so, please donate anything you can--even old instruments and accessories--all will help these wonderful places continue their important missions, even for us "old people."

Thanks! Phil
