Kreutzer? Cripes!

The return to the violin after all these years has been a journey of discovery on so many levels. There is the obvious in terms of the physical processes involved in making music. The connection of the fingers to different notes, a growing familiarity with the geography of the violin.

The mental journey has involved the slaying of childhood demons, the laying aside of the heavy burden of self-imposed expectation and the meeting of music once more with an open heart and an appetite for discovery.

And so it was last week at the end of the lesson as I was putting the violin in its case, fastening the neckstrap, laying down its velvet blanket and slackening the bow, my teacher said that it would be a worthwhile investment to get Kreutzer's 42 Studies.

This is a change. It's a definite step on the road to somewhere. An acknowledgement that both he and I are serious in this endeavour.
