I dont post here much anymore because I used to have more time for this internet violin stuff, I spend more time practicing than I used to. This is mostly because of the warm weather, I hardly ever practice when its cold. Another thing is that I listen to recordings alot less. I used to listen to recordings alot but when you practice alot and work a full time job there simply isnt time. Well that and going out at night and flirting with women, trying to find a significant other again (my best friend and I always say if youre not making an ass out of yourself, its not a good night - but the trick is to find a place you can make an ass out of yourself and come back the next night without someone looking at you funny or asking you to leave)
Anyways, yesterday was an exciting practice, I was playing the bach g min adagio and for the first time I fealt like the violin was doing what I wanted it to do. Every sound somehow seemed effortless and the music came out of me willingly, at some point I felt like I was in a trance by my own violin. Hey I know Im not a great violin player but I love it so much that I refuse to give up. It is nice every once in a while that I do things on the violin and even if it is every once in a while, it is so rewarding and exciting to even be able to play a few simple things.
Im beginning to start hinking about having a first recital. I have selected Bach g min adagio, Brahms Sonata 1, a Chopin Waltz a Chopin Nocturne and Estrillita by Ponce. Even if it takes me 5 or even 10 years it will be worth it when I am able to play all that.
Been trying to practice vibrato double stops, its so hard for me now but I can feel my hand start to loosen up so Im making progress but Im still a long way from where I need to be.
I was recently reading about someone who played Kreisler's DelGesu and he was talking about how this violin didnt respond to pressure but did respond more to a faster bow speed. This really made me rething the whole pressure vs speed thing again. Im starting to think it depends on your violin for how much you should press down. I think the thing to do is just expermient with the violin you have and see what the violin responds to the most and notice what you do that yields the best tone. Im starting to think every violin responds differently.

Midori's Mendelssohn - I returned this to the library but somehow I found myself craving it so I checked it out again and I think Im addicted. I think its the best mendelssohn Ive heard since Perlman Szeryng and Ill admit I like the young mutter recording. This recording put Midori on the map for me and even though there are some rubatos in it, I really love the recording. Its the only recording by her I really like alot.
Also have been listening to gobs of vivaldi - cds recorded by Mintz, Perlman and Zukerman. Im addicted to Vivaldi, cant seem to get enough.
Also gobs of Bach - the violin/harpsichord sonatas with grumiaux and mullova, I want to get podger and ehnes too one day. Also borrowed a copy of the sonatas for flute and harpsichord by bach, I love the sound so much!
Bought some new music recently
I finally got the Oistrakh dvd with the Brahms concerto, I love Oistrakh but the videos are from the mid to late 60's well after he was in his prime. I believe Oistrakh was great from about 1950-1960 and 1960 is when his technique started to decline, the intonation started to go away some and the shifts are slower. I noticed rubatos all over the place especially the chord section of the first movement. Even still Im glad I got it and its great to see more of oistrakh playing.
I was able to borrow the Night of the Proms video from the library. This features Hilary Hahn playing Mozart 4 and the Bach G min presto, wow its really amazing and I love the cadenza, she is playing, I wonder if it is ysaye's cadenza? In one review of her Brahms recording someone said she reminds them of Milstein. I started to get that by watching this video, her vibrato is not too syrupy, a nice conservative vibrato that is expressive but not overly so. I think she is more like a cross between Milstein and Szeryng, varying in terms of her use of vibrato and expression. Of course since she is playing Mozart she may be toning it down a bit because she is playing music from the classical era but it got me thinking about Hahn's style more.
Also bought some more cds by James Ehnes - the wieniawski/sarasate cd and the dohnanyi cds. In doing so I noticed the Dvorak is just about to come out. I have yet to be disapointed by Mr Ehnes. Perhaps he is the greatest violinist since Rabin and before long, the name Ehnes will be a household word. I sincerely hope he will get signed by a better label because I think the people he is with now is not doing him justice with respect to tone.
Yes Rabin is my favorite violinist of all time, please feel free to visit my forum for Michael Rabin. Funny I met someone in there who recently sent me some rare radio broadcasts of Mr Rabin, one is Glazunov from 1954, in his prime. ahh its good to have friends :)
