You, dear Beethoven, are a cruel tease

May 27, 2009 at 5:57 PM

You, dear Beethoven
are a cruel tease.
Your music seduces and entices me
I can’t resist it.

I lift my bow
with pure anticipation
to taste -
the simple pleasures you offer

Yet you,
Are not so easily captured.
With impish delight
You soar just out of my reach

You will not be appeased
by technical prowess,
or the lofty
promotion of Self

You strip away my confidence.
By design, you shatter
all musical ideals
I know to be right

And so I learn
To humble my pride.
To reach,
for the impossible

to finally comprehend
that your music was never intended
for the destination
but for the journey

Parts of that fine poem sound like my wife. LOL. Just kidding. Really. Well, sort of.

Oh, good Lord!!  How can I possibly resist responding to this one?

I'm so discouraged,
I'll have a scotch and soda,
Cause no one has the time
For a Beethoven coda.

I try to play Beethoven's anything,
But it always fails.
How do you make music
Out of arpeggios and scales?

Sure, he was a genius.
His 5th Symphony? How'd he think it?
But play it the right way?
I'd rather drink it.

Yet if truth be told
(And I'm not being coy)
It's Beethoven's music
That I owed to joy.

:) Sandy
