ABOUT ASTA/NJ CHAMBER MUSIC INSTITUTE WHAT IS CMI? CMI is a residential classical music camp focusing on chamber music performance. Students are assigned to work with a trio, quartet or quintet throughout the week. Each group meets twice daily for coaching sessions with CMI artist faculty. Each session culminates in a public concert featuring student ensembles. Internationally renowned artists (Concert Artist Ensemble of Kean University & the Colorado String Quartet) will present a master class and Q&A session for CMI students followed by a public recital. Concerts by CMI Faculty, special presentations, workshops and a variety of fun activities round out CMI. HOW LARGE A CAMP IS CMI? Enrollment is limited to a total of 40 students per session in order to keep a high student – faculty ratio and a high level of personalized attention for every student. WHEN: CMI runs in two consecutive, week-long sessions. Students (entering 9th grade – first year of college) may sign up for one or both of the sessions. Session I, July 26 – August 1, 2009. Our featured ensemble for this week is the superb Concert Artist Ensemble of Kean University who will work with student ensembles, present a master class/performance workshop and evening concert on July 30, 2009. Session II, August 2 – 8, 2009. Our featured ensemble for this week is world renowned Colorado Quartet who will work with student ensembles, present a master class/performance workshop and evening concert on August 6, 2009. WHO: CMI is open to students entering the 9th grade – first year of college who play violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp or classical guitar. WHAT IS THE PERFORMANCE LEVEL OF MOST ASTA/NJ CMI PARTICIPANTS? We have been fortunate to attract many very high level student performers in all years of ASTA/NJ CMI. The most advanced of these students are participants in top level precollege programs in NYC, regular participants in competitions and the highest level student orchestras. CMI also regularly attracts students new to chamber music or to summer music camps. We are an excellent 'first experience' for these students in that we are able to place students in ensembles with students of similar age & ability level. For this same reason we are able to accomodate students with greater experience and more advanced performance levels. We work to create an environment in which students are supportive of one another's efforts and in which one can be successful at any level of advancement. HOW DO I APPLY TO CMI? Simply click the ‘Apply Now’ button on our web page (http://www.astanj.com/chambermusic.php)and then follow instructions found on the downloadable 'application procedure' document. QUESTIONS: Please address any questions you have to the either of the following individuals: OUR HISTORY: In 2005, Mary Ann Mumm, Margaret Zufall Roberts, and Chris Kenniff (yours truly) put our heads together around the idea of starting a summer music camp for students interested in developing their chamber music skills. With much support from Kean University (Dr. Anthony Scelba, in particular) we developed plans for ASTA CMI 2005. We had no idea how successful the event would be and were truly overwhelmed by the response from students and parents alike. This swell of enthusiasm and approval continued throughout CMI 2006, CMI 2007 and CMI 2008. As I look forward to ASTA CMI 2009 – our fifth consecutive year - I anticipate the best CMI yet. Please do take the time to peruse our website and please do contact me with any questions you might have about ASTA CMI 2009.
