Program:
Located on a 1,300 acre campus in Michigan’s Manistee National Forest, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp offers programs for a variety of ages and abilities, including a junior camp, a Suzuki family camp, an adult arts camp, and orchestra programs for grades 7-9 and 9-12. The orchestra program accepts students of all proficiency levels. Players are grouped by ability, as determined by auditions on the opening day of the session. Students receive five hours of daily rehearsals, sectionals, and technique classes. Students also have the opportunity to hear various performances presented as a part of Blue Lake’s Summer Arts Festival, as well as to participate in elective courses and recreational activities. During Session II, Blue Lake offers senior high school students an opportunity to compete in a solo competition. One student will be selected to return to camp to perform with the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra in Session IV on a live broadcast on Blue Lake Public Radio as part of our season finale, and will receive a scholarship to return to camp the following year.------------------------------------- Blue Lake also maintains a highly successful International Exchange program. Each year (summer) BLFAC arranges US tours for multiple European ensembles and also sends six ensembles to Europe, one of which is the International Youth Symphony Orchestra (IYSO). The IYSO consists mainly of high school aged musicians, along with several college aged counselors. Tours usually last about four weeks and are followed by a homecoming concert at the camp in Michigan. This group performs at a relatively high level, and young musicians often learn a lot from the experience. Recent selections have included Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherezade," Benjamin Britten's "A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and 4th and 5th symphonies, Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture," and Gershwin's "An American in Paris." The principal program for Summer 2007 includes Bernstein's "Overture to Candide" and "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story" as well as Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition"

There's an annual chamber music camp for adults at Blue Lake called "Chamber Music for Fun." This year it runs from Monday, August 18 to Saturday, August 23. I've attended the last 2 years. It's a wonderful camp; usually they have about 15-20 violists; 20 cellists; and 35 violinists. I play cello and didn't get my application in on time this year -they filled up the 1st of April.

I've taught at Blue Lake since 1986. It's a wonderful summer camp for all levels. It's more "camp-y" than some music festivals, but that's part of its charm. Blue Lake is in a beautiful wooded area and is less than 15 minutes to Lake Michigan. It's a great experience for both faculty and students.
