Eastern Music FestivalLast edited by Kate Brynildsen. When: Where: Founded in 1962, Eastern Music Festival and School is a 5-week program (late June to late July) on the campus of Guilford College in North Carolina. Eastern accepts pre-professional student musicians between the ages of 14 and 20. Enrollment is competitive and limited to 200 students. Eastern has two student orchestras (of equal ability), each of which rehearse six times weekly and presents a full-length concert of standard orchestral repertoire on a weekly series open to the public. Seating assignments change weekly, and students generally perform in both orchestras during the course of the Festival. Both orchestras will typically perform with faculty soloists, visiting artists, and the winners of the student concerto competition. Orchestral students also participate in the festival's chamber music program and receive one-hour weekly lessons with a faculty member. Students also attend master classes offered by faculty and visiting artists. Illustrious alumni include Rebecca Boyer and Angie Smart, both of the St. Louis Symphony, and Bruce Patti of the Dallas Symphony.
