Restless

September 24, 2017, 10:23 AM · Hi,

So in the spirit of the concurrent thread on shoulder rest/restless, I took a few pictures of me (a rebeginner-advanced beginner-left when i was early intermediate and now working with a teacher)holding the violin as i do when im practicing.

i dont know if its a good posture or not according to others here but so far its working for me. i do not raise my shoulder to touch the violin (if there is a raise, its very slight..not to support the violin); it just rests on the collar bone. i would like to ask what you guys think of the posture (if i may of course).

im doing shifting (again no shoulder raise). im not doing vibrato however. i have to pay attention to the way my hand holds the violin so it doesn't sink into too deep into the palm; the violin is usually either vertical or slightly angled upwards ..i cant do downwards like that. anyway here goes :)

September 24, 2017, 4:31 PM · Hi Tammuz,

I see four pictures of your playing position on first link. At first I thought you had lefty violin until I realized you were in a mirror. I think your set up looks good in the photographs and it is hard to go restless. I committed to practice for two or three months without a rest but back to usung it as I play better and more naturally . Thought I would give it a try though. There is a big learning curve from even tuning up, and then for me shifting and vibrato were forced and unnatural without my trusty rest.

Edited: September 24, 2017, 4:58 PM · Thanks Jeff. How come i cant see the pictures here though? And when i copy one of the adresses into explorer i get a photobucket message concerning upgrading to allow posting pics with third party or something. I think i followed v.com instructions (copy img link then pasted here)
Anyway this is the link

The correct way to insert a link is:
<a href="your.url">displayed link of the name</a>
To post an image directly:
<img src="your.url">

I will leave it to the professional teachers to comment on holding and highly suggest others to do the same instead of posting semi wrong stuff.
October 8, 2017, 2:56 PM · It is impossible to comment on your position without actually seeing what happens while you play. Video would be much more informative, and not in a mirror. Sorry.
