George Neikrug, cellist
George Neikrug is 99 years old today. He has been one of the greatest influences on both my teaching and playing.
I went to him at the age of 28 after previous study with Josef Gingold, Ivan Galamian, and Dorothy Delay. He totally turned around a slump I was having at the time and he allowed me to observe numerous lessons of his other students which informed me about his incredibly effective teaching method. He attributes his teaching style to Dr. D. C. Dounis with whom he studied for many years.
I invited him a number of years ago to give masterclasses at Baylor University over 3 days to the violinists, violists, cellists, and double bass players. Every student made improvement and I learned a lot more.
Happy birthday to him! What was his teaching style like?
