Black Gospel or Praise music on violin

Life in general: I like to play Black Gospel on the violin. Is it possible? Have you heard of anyone who plays that type of music on the violin?

I appreciate all of the wonderful comments on the board about me as a black female thinking I was being discriminated against. Things are going wonderful; I have a great teacher and I am learning a lot. I want to ask one question. I like to play Black Gospel on the violin. Is it possible? Have you heard of anyone who plays that type of music on the violin? I have on some praise strings albums- but they sounds sort of cheesy?

i've never heard it, the closest thing i can think of is regina carter, thats not gospel at all but its closer than classical. and she is a black female like you.

teresa, i would think pretty much any genre is possible on the violin. i wouldn't have thought countryish music was possible on the cello until i heard john hagan from lyle lovett's band.
i like regina carter, and i'm sure there is a plethora of gospel sheet music out there arranged for violin, or for some instrument that you could arrange. i'd listen to a lot of gospel music and try to play along with recordings to get the feel of it. there was a thread here some time ago on learning to play jazz, there might be some applicable advice there, even though we're talking about gospel now.

Theresa, regina carter plays a song called "there is a god" on a album called "Detroit Expirement", the sound she gets from her violin has that southern gospel sound. Its just her and a piano player named Geri Allen, and its really pretty. YOu can also try listening to a blues fiddler named Claude "fiddler" williams, who sometimes dabbles into a gospel sound, he even has a song titled "preacher".

Fiddler just recently passed away earlier this year. He will be missed.
Charlie Daniels has a 2-disc gospel album called "How Sweet The Sound". I haven't personally listened to it, but the cover photo has him holding his fiddle which suggests that he plays it in one or more songs.
