Has anyone ever heard of this company? The local music shop pushes this china made violin but I can't find any feedback on it.

Violmaster is one of the many "brands" being pushed, many by Chinese based companies. Most of these instruments are student level instruments and are find for learning, but look around...you may find a few more dollars can get you a substanially better instrument. For instance, at www.violinsetc.com you can get a great Romanian made violin for under $800.
