The shorter the string, the lower the tension.
As an example:
If you "shorten" your string length, say by playing an E on your D string, to get that "shortened" string (via your finger)back to a D, you would have to release tension on the string.

September 13, 2016 at 06:35 PM · The following factors will determine string tension:
1. vibrating string length
2. string gague
3. tuning frequency
4. materials used
All thing being equal, shorter string with proportionally thicker gauge, tuned to the same frequency could yield approximately the same tension.
So could thinner, but longer string.
From my limited experience, it appears that string producers do not follow this 100%, so fractional strings are not thick enough to compensate for shorter length. This may in fact make sense, because smaller sound box could not tolerate higher tension.
