Audition Help: Haydn in G Major

September 1, 2016 at 02:39 PM · I am auditioning for the Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra and will be playing Haydn G Major Violin concerto, 1st movement. Do I have to play the cadenza (I am using Peters edition) since a cadenza wasn't part of the original music by Haydn, plus I haven't learned the cadenza and my audition is in 2 weeks? Should I mention beforehand when I let them know my audition piece that I will not be playing a cadenza so they do not ask for it? Any advice is appreciated!

(also, is this too easy a piece for this type of audition? I played it last year for all-states, but it's not that difficult of a piece...)

If they do ask for the cadenza you can tell them that you have not learned the cadenza.

However, you should always learn a cadenza for any work that has one. I assume that you just haven't gotten that far, as opposed to intending to actually skip learning one?

The difficulty of a work factors into your audition evaluation, but it's better to play something very well than to struggle through something that's too advanced for you. However, a difficult piece played well is going to beat a simpler piece played well.
