Chamber music for all violinsRepertoire: Question about chamber music for violins. From Shaun Lazar Does anyone know of any chamber music that is written for all violins??? I have a group of 10-12 advanced violinists, and want to put something together for them to play, and I am fresh out of ideas. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

Posted on November 3, 2009 at 11:38 PM There's plenty out there. A lot of Baroque -- Telemann has quite a few multi-violin pieces, I believe. Vivaldi. Barrage has fun stuff. If you watch their videos, you can also get some good ideas for how to "make it fun" and divide up solos and such. From Stephen Brivati

Posted on November 4, 2009 at 08:36 PM If you're willing to hire a cellist/continuo and violist you can find ways to show case groups of players at the same time. There are lots of baroque concerti for 2, 3, even 4 violins. Whoever is not playing a solo part can play a tutti part. Or you can always play duets and have 6 players to each part. It's not what the music intended but it can be done for lack of a better option. From violin playr

Posted on November 6, 2009 at 04:15 AM Hey Shaun!! I have some stuff written/arranged for 4 violins by Douglas Townsend. I hope to be back at Ed Maday next Thursady. If you can meet me there, I can lend it to you! From Ronald Mutchnik
Posted on November 6, 2009 at 11:34 PM There is Charles Dancla's clever and somewhat challenging Variations for Four Violins on "Ah vous dirai-je maman!" ( Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star) and Hellmesberger's Romance for Four Violins- both very nice pieces that sound well but the Hellmesberger does have a piano accompaniment part so it is not strictly for four violins alone. These composers were well known violinists and violin teachers of the nineteenth century ( Hellmesberger taught Joachim) and their etudes and pieces are still used in teaching and occasionally performed.

Posted on November 7, 2009 at 01:42 PM Some years ago I played an excellent quartet for four violins by Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz. It is a 20th-century work but is basically tonal and should be quite accessible for audiences. From violin playr
