Help with choosing pieces for halloween ball.

Repertoire: I want some dark / eerie pieces to play for a halloween ball.

I have been asked to play some solo violin pieces at a halloween ball.

I am tying to decide what to play.

I want some dark / eerie pieces to play and I am having a hard time finding some that I want to play.

Do any of you have some suggestions?

The Shostakovich concerto feels like it was written with Halloween in mind.  Other things that come to mind that have a sort of eerie quality imho:

- Tzigane (intro)

- 2nd and 3d movements from Ceasar Franck Sonata

Have fun!

There is a violin and piano version of Danse Macabre. In fact, I think Saint-Saens arranged it himself.

I doubt there's enough time to get it ready but Paganini's Witches Dance (the real one, not Suzuki version) is really cool.  good luck!

Thanks guys those are some good suggestions. I have been brushing up on Tzigane so that will for sure be one of them that I play. I am going to the library today to see if the sheet music to a few of the others you suggested are there.

Thanks again

Beethoven 2nd mvt of 7th symphony sounds like a funebre walk...

On the popular side, exorsist moovie music, Halloween theme are always big winners because people like them so much!  (I don't know about an adapted score for violin? Maybe you have to adapt one for piano)   Harry Potter's music would be great too!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to forget Michael Jackson's Triller...

Best of lucks!

Anne-Marie, I disagree.  The second movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony sounds absolutely beautiful and not at all funebre to me.

How about themes from Night on Bald Mountain?  Just playing them is scary.  Ravel's Bolero, which I rather dislike, sounds like communication with ghosts or spirits.  Michael Jackson's Thriller would be great.  If you sing or can get someone to sing while you play, The Long Black Veil is another good, spooky one.  Funeral March of the Marionettes is good, and you can download the sheet music for free at www.musicnotes.com/download/suite/default.asp

lol yes it's very beautiful but I don't know why, we all find (in our family) that it is sad like in a funeral...  sure It's not frightening though.

Last night I tried by ear to do the exorcist because I will maybe have to play a very short non formal thing for Halloween, it sounds great on violin and it's possible to do the double voices at some places. Although nothing beats a real score of a piece...   The beginning of Harry Potter theme is beautiful too on the violin!!!

Good luck again!

The Dance of the Goblins by Bazzini comes to mind though I am not sure it is exactly what you are looking for.

The slow air, Port na bPúcaí (Fairy Music), blends the natural and supernatural and is easy to play by ear. Alternatively the notes are here.

As I am going to see the opera next month I’m bound to suggest any of the ghost scenes from  The Turn of the Screw by Britten. It’s an insanely brilliant combination of terror, seduction, ambiguity, isolation and hysteria. It sounds fiendishly difficult and would suit a small group.

I’ve played a few pieces from Phantom of the Opera and the ones that work well for solo violin are “Point of No Return” and “Music of the Night”.

Enjoy your gig!

Hi, Edward: I can see that you've had a devil of a time scaring up a piece to play for this holiday, but I hope you've been able to dig up something. There are several available, of course, but I don't know witch one you'd like best, but I hope that whatever you choose is a real treat.
Cheers,
Sandy
