Recession Hits the Boston Symphony

News: The BSO laying off people.

From Ray Randall

Times are tough for even the biggies.
The Assistant Concertmaster, Asst. Principal Second, Viola and Cello are gone since they were just assistants.
The entire flute section gone.  One bassoon and one horn are now history and rumors persist that the triangle player also got the ax.

BSO makes cutsBSO makes cuts
10 employees are being laid off from the Boston Symphony Orchestra., Managing director Mark Volpe issued the following statement: "Like other cultural institutions nationwide, the BSO is facing serious challenges due to this past year’s economic downturn, including a substantial decline in the value of the orchestra’s endowment. In the course of confronting these challenges, the BSO found it necessary to reduce its full time work force by 5.3%. The BSO remains committed to maintaining its financial equilibrium, while pursuing its mission as one of the leading orchestras in the world."

the actual instruments cut are not listed but I am sure the program will not suffer....perhaps was decided on knowing what instrumental needs would be prior to cutting anyway. It's not like the second fiddle section will be pre-recorded. Hey, is Perlman on the docket this summer???????

How can an orch. like the BSO loose an entire flute section? Tis truly unfortunate.

In the community orchestra where I play (I would call it a semi-professional ensemble) they took a different approach to budget cuts. For next season there is one concert that is only winds and one that is only strings, Also, a couple of concerts won't utilize all the string players, Everyone is still in but not everyone plays all the time. I'm happy with that compromise.

The actual headline is

BSO makes staff cuts

but it's kind of fun the way Ray posted it ;-)

At least the Tubist doesnt have to worry about the recession, much anyway; his salary is funded by my friend's grandparents.

Maybe if major orchestras they didn't pay conductors a zillion dollars to conduct a few concerts here and there they could actually save some jobs for other people who need them.

What Scott said.  You could probably rehire all the flutes on what the conductor makes.

Why fire all the flutes? They are an important part of orchestra.
