Bucking Trend, BSO Thrives under Marin Alsop's DirectionNews: During the first two years of Marin Alsop's term as Music Director of the BSO, the orchestra has thrived financially and musically.
Marin Alsop has signed a contract which will extend her term as Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for another 5 years. The orchestra has made great strides since Ms. Alsop took over two years ago. In her first season, subscriptions increased by 23%; annual giving was up by 31%; and the BSO resumed making commercial CDs after a hiatus of almost a decade. Ms. Alsop donated seed money to start an outreach after school music program in Baltimore. The Music Director and the musicians praise each other enthusiastically. In a highly unusual move, the musicians of the BSO said that they would be willing to give back $1 million through wage freezes and other concessions to help the BSO weather the recession.

Posted on June 15, 2009 at 05:23 AM Terez, I read that the musicians initially were very strongly against her (I don't know why) at first, but in the two years she spent with the orchestra before becoming the Music Director, they warmed up to her. Now they have a very good working relationship, and they make very, very good music. |
