I'm trying to plan my summer. Can someone suggest a good chamber music program that preferably includes individual coaching for adult amateurs (no longer than two weeks)? i'm looking for the most intense program available outside of the professional programs.

Thanks!

Apple Hill in New Hampshire might suit you.

Check our http://www.summerkeys.com/ Although this program has a number of piano students, they offer quality programs for other musicians as well. It's in quaint Lubec, Maine, is for adults, and you get to decide how much you want to practice. I attended last year and had Trond Severaud (spelling) as my instructor. He was outstanding, and he tailored his instruction to my individual needs. You get individual and group lessons. Here you can also play with others if you wish--violin, piano, cello, etc. In July, I believe, Making Music will run an article I wrote about Summer Keys, but, by then, it might be too late to register. Oh, yes, do take time to enjoy the food of the area, especially the seafood chowder and the little bakery across the border in Canada. I stayed at a B&B, which was nice, but I think I would have preferred someplace where I could practice more, but Summer Keys does have practice rooms.

Hi Jim,

Try the Amateur Chamber Music Players (www.acmp.net). They publish a directory of summer chamber music opportunities for amateur musicians all around the world. If you are looking to work hard then Apple Hill is a good choice. I've never been but know people who have. It is a mix of amateurs and music/conservatory students.

There's also the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop, held in Claremont, CA.

Ensemble-in-residence this summer is the Biava Quartet!

great suggestions! The Claremont program looks the most attractive at the moment.

i'm torn between doing this and attending the Banff String quartet competition.

or, i could do both hehe

btw is there another more prestigious string quartet competition taking place this year?

Hi Jim,

There's the Fischoff competition which happens every year. I believe it is in May. You may want to check their website (Fischoff National Chamber Music Association). It is a very prestigious competition and I've had the pleasure of hearing some past winners who are amazing chamber musicians.
