I'm having a little bit of trouble conceptually with playing in 7th position. In practicing the c-major flesch scales I notice that once I shift up to 7th or 8th I get quite an unpleasant sound (Almost like what you would hear from a really cheap fractional sized childs instrument). I don't think it has too much to do with my right hand technique either, as I'm making sure to use very smooth, light strokes using most of my bow. In terms of my left hand I'm pressing the string to the fingerboard in these higher positions to play the note as I would normally do to play any notes in the lower positions. However, a friend of mine that's a violist is recommending that I use my finger to lightly pull the string from the side instead (so the string doesn't make contact with the fingerboard) to play the note. Is the same principle necessary for us violinists?
I have a lesson tomorrow, and I intend to bring it up then, but I'm curious as to what you guys would recommend.
