Your question I think was why The conductor is 1 beat ahead of an orchestra? Actually sir. As a conductor of a full orchestra (An orchestra with not only strings is what I meant.), I conduct not behind or ahead of time... The orchestra is the one behind the beat, But that dosnt mean that the orchestra is having a mistake there. NO. Even I am a sheet music sight reader... I still need time to read the sheets. About a 500MS - 1 second to read sheet music in front of me.
Also, To take time for the players to read the sheets (Which the callibur of our orchestra is where the players are total sight readers and need only a few rehearsals.).
Eye contact. (For incoming parts of the orchestra)
Body Language. (When your session is missing a wide range of dynamics and such... Like if its too fast. Etc etc.)
Expressive Forte and MezzoPiano to Piano. (Hand signs)
Moderato to Allegro. (Hand Signs)
All of those take some time to execute.
So the orchestra is 1-4 beats behind depending on the piece that's being played.
