The Inner Game of Tennis Works

October 19, 2009 at 3:11 AM

It is amazing how a simple pat on the back can boost one's self esteem. So why does it not work? I got the pat on the back, but I still feel empty inside. A total stranger says "that was just incredible." I didn't even look at him. I just said "thank you" and kept walking. Why? Perhaps, my thinking self is jealous of my doing self.

You mean your head is jealous at your body because you find you play better than you think??? For me it's my body who should be jealous of my head (which is more talented than it...) lol  But maybe I didn't catch what you meant?   About getting a stranger give you an encouragement pat on the shoulder/back with good words for you, I think it's wonderful when you feel you derserve it but when you are not happy with what you did and feel more like crying (even if you don't because you're in public),  it harder to accept, even though you must smile and say thank you because the stranger really thinks it and is happy to tell it to you!

Good luck,

Anne-Marie
