April 2007In Memoriam: Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007)April 28, 2007 00:33People always say that the assassination of former US president John F. Kennedy was one of those events where everybody remembers the exact circumstances in which they heard the news. The attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in September 2001 was another one of those "Where Were You" moments. For my part, my dad woke me up bearing the news that fateful morning. Hearing of the death of Mstislav Rostropovich this morning will be just as etched into my memory. I had just woken up and was perusing MSNBC headlines open on my mom's computer, and I could make out the words: "Rostropovich, cellist and conductor --" and the rest of the headline was taken up by another window. I knew what it was. Speculation around his health had been going around since he appeared quite frail at his 80th birthday celebration just a month ago. Everybody knew it was coming eventually, but news of his passing still came as a complete shock. Even now, I remain floored. I didn't know Rostropovich personally, but I almost feel like I did, despite being over sixty years his junior. He was one of those folks everybody thought they knew, just because his music spoke so clearly, so passionately, and so directly to the soul; such music bonds us musicians all as one giant family. It is a family that, today, has lost one of its dearest members. Rest in peace, Slava. Syndicated from theBlogject
