New year resolutions

January 2, 2006 at 6:03 AM

I gave up making new year resolutions long ago. My resolutions were idealistic, and I never came anywhere near living up to them. I just read Emily’s new year resolutions and got a new perspective. This year I’ll make my resolutions realistic. I’ll use phrases like “a little less” and “a little more.” I’ll start by copying one of Emily’s resolutions.

I resolve to

  • Go to bed before midnight at least once

  • Make long distance calls to my out-of-town friends more often

  • Learn more about bluegrass, early music, and jazz

  • Practice my orchestra music more often and earlier than the night before rehearsal

  • Clean out at least one of my closets and throw out some of my junk

  • Cut back my spending on nonessential items, i.e., stop buying sheet music and practice what I’ve already got

  • Eat just a little less junk food or, when this is not possible, as with ice cream, eat the low fat kind sometimes

  • Practice yoga and exercise a little more often

  • Learn more folk and traditional music by playing along with CDs

  • Clean my home at least once when I’m not having friends over shortly

  • Watch some violin videos

  • Go for walks in a nearby park more often

  • Learn some CSS

  • Go to museums or art galleries occasionally
