Coming up for air

May 7, 2009 at 3:20 AM

The past few weeks have been insanly busy.  Rehearsals almost every night of the week culminating with an amazing performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony on Friday night, then Dvorak's New World on Saturday night.  It was almost more than I could handle with only a few weeks of rehearsal and practice.  But, I made it through my first concerts in Houston and I'm looking forward to some personal practice time.

I'm starting to study Bach's 4th Suite Prelude - an exercise in string crossings and accidentals that make you do a double-take (c-flats, b-flat-flats, etc..), and Bloch's Suite (the other one).  With the Bloch, I've barely made it out of the first few measures, debating whether or not to stay a bit lower on the fingerboard with a few string crossings or to climb high on the D string.  Both approaches are musical and have their own merits and demerits.  Right now I'm favoring going higher on the D string, but the question then is how to come back down to the low C-sharp.....

gracefully....
