Vibrant tone of 2007 Bissolotti- audio file (Mendelssohn excerpt)

November 25, 2007 at 9:06 AM

I went back and listened to the clips I recorded and found that the 2007 Bissolotti had a richness of tone that I did not fully appreciate while I was playing. Perhaps it's because it was the 4th violin in the lineup and I found it a little harder to play. It was also the newest instrument and needed playing in. But listening to it again, I can only say that the tone is gorgeous and exhilarating.

For those who don't know, Maestro Francesco Bissolotti is one of the most influential violin makers in Cremona today. He taught violin-making at the Scuola Internazionale diLuteriadi Cremona (International School of Violin Making of Cremona), and is considered one of the founders of modern Cremona violin-making.

I'm including an excerpt from Mendelssohn violin concerto #1 played on the 2007 Bissolotti. I'm sure a better player can bring this violin's potential out much more. Enjoy!

I am glad that you posted the link. I think that the Bissolotti sounds very nice indeed. I was particularly struck by it's evenness in different registers. It has a burnished brightness without any harshness. This is a good example of how an instrument we are trying can be lost within a group of other instruments when we choose without clear memory and with a innocent bias. It is so difficult to remember the subtle things that differentiate the instruments while in the midst of the trial. It was very wise to record the process.
