December 2004December 27, 2004 17:56Been listening to a lot of Joshua Bell, his Kreisler album, the Romance of the Violin, his Mendelssohn and Beethoven. Maybe others don't like him, but I find his tone as clear as a bell, and very soothing. I have not seen him in action so I don't know about the gyrations, etc. But I do like what I hear. My other Mendelssohn album is ASM, and she does too much improvising. Now that I'm studying Mendelssohn, I'm going to cut back on listening to anybody, so that I can have my own sound.
December 16, 2004 23:48My 2nd recital as an adult returnee. Whew, I'm glad it's over. The hours of practicing Kreisler Praeludium & Allegro until my family was sick of it. I was nervous for days on end, but found myself strangely not nervous while playing. Maybe I was just not realizing my nerves or adrenalin was rushing through my system, but I got through all the hard places and doublestops great, only to flub some of the easier straightforward parts. Boo hoo. What a way to ruin a piece.I had all these last minute fingering and bowing changes, and broke the tip of my bow while practicing (hit a corner of the violin, nice dent). And this morning I had to swap out my E string that went flat. Nice Titanium Vision E though, that high note in the Praeludium part really rang out nicely.
