Ease of Relaxation and How to Obtain It

January 25, 2010 at 4:19 PM

I recently started to "enjoy" my playing and relax in the notes that I play. My musicality is more distinct and I am expressing my individuality much more. This has also led to less tension during more virtousic passages and better technicality.

I am attributing all of this to my stricter practicing. If there is a difficult passage, I play it painfully slow (but with patience), no vibrato, and clearly listening for intonating. I practice the shifts until they are pinpoint precise. Then, the metronome is added very slowly. It is sped up well past concert tempo.

This ensures that I have no worries when playing and I can continue to relax which, afterall, is the key. This also works well for easier pieces, like Mozart and Bach.

Any of you have similar methods of practicing or relaxation?
