How to Liberate a Bow Arm

By Clayton Haslop
October 30, 2009 11:28

Today’s message should be very helpful to you, IF, that is, you are like most violinists and can always use an insight or two to keep your right arm technique sharp.

You see, most players have four main challenges where it comes to their bow-arm; keeping it straight, keeping it horizontal, achieving clean, non-disruptive string crossings, and coordinating changes of string and direction with the left hand.

Now, you may think of disagreeing with me. You may be thinking, ‘my biggest problem is with spiccato, I can do all those other things.’

If that’s the case, I’d say, you’d be wise to pay attention, your spiccato difficulties may have more to do with these things than you think...

Paganini with prunes

By Stephen Brivati
October 28, 2009 20:42

I didn’t respond to it at the time but I remember being somewhat startled by a comment on this site about Paganini being a second rate (?) composer/orchestrator, his name being coupled with Chopin in this regard.  The work of the latter cited was the f# minor piano concerto.  Actually I was playing that work in orchestra at the time and thought that in spite of the criticism of banality it actually had quite a few creative and interesting aspects and was thrilling to play.
Alas, I cannot offer the slightest sensible analysis of Chopin or even Paganini for that matter,  but I have been pondering this question a bit recently.  Since my in depth musical knowledge is profoundly limited I tend to see the following three criteria as equaling a `good` composer/orchestrator:   1) good tunes 2) interesting combinations of orchestral instruments and 3) knowing when to stop (as opposed to Schubert…)

Employment

By Robert Eshbach
October 28, 2009 13:33

¶ In actuality you are always being employed to express all the best qualities you are capable of, such as intelligence, wisdom, beauty, balance, grace, sensitivity, awareness, love...this is full-time employment, and it doesn't take a full-time paying job to put these qualities into practice. Getting the job merely continues the expression of these qualities, which should ever continue to grow and develop. The job is really an acknowledgement of those qualities already expressed. —Marylou Speaker Churchill Read more...

'Lost Situational Awareness'

By Terez Mertes
October 28, 2009 09:44

A conductor for the Really Big Orchestra, who delayed the final movement of Tuesday night’s performance of Schumann’s Symphony no. 1 has denied having a disagreement with the concertmaster or cracking jokes at the podium. Maestro Holdyer Applaws refused to say what had distracted him to such a degree that he forgot to end the third movement of the symphony and proceed to the fourth movement, delaying intermission by thirty minutes. Audience members in the Louderpleez Symphony Hall were not aware of the problem, as orchestra members seemed to have the situation under control and had not pressed the call button to alert the conductor. "The concertmaster and I were not having an argument; we were not telling viola jokes," Mr. Applaws said in regards to speculation over what caused the problem. For more than twenty minutes, backstage personnel and concert hall administrators attempted to contact Mr. Applaws and concertmaster Coudabin Asoloist, using Bluetooth earpiece communication, frantic hand gestures, and flashing of the stage lights. The audience, apparently, still had no idea anything was wrong. “I thought it was simply a multimedia performance,” one audience member shared afterward.

Termination Dust

By Emily Grossman
October 28, 2009 02:22

Maybe I should have kids. Maybe then I would stop pretending like my students are my children, thus relieving them from so many unexpected expectations upon entering my studio.

"Hello there, and welcome to my studio! Please note, there is an eighteen-year commitment; by signing my contract, you hereby surrender all rights and subject yourself completely to my authority. Also, please be sure to wash your hands before you play. Make sure you get your practicing done before you watch TV, not after. --No complaining! And remember, 'Because I said so' is the final word, so don't even think about talking back. Finish your theory, or else no dessert. ...Don't you give me that look! Watch it, or I'll give you something to cry about!"

Funny as it sounds, I've become accustomed to my authoritative figure as a violin teacher. It's quite enjoyable, really, to be in the position where it is not only acceptable, but expected, for me to criticize mistakes, correct wrong behavior, offer praises and stickers upon compliance, and make everyone wash their hands. Yes, I admit some people would label me a control freak. However, others in the same position are simply called... mothers... Read more...
