Side by Side with Warren Central HS Orchestra

Published: Sep. 26, 2008 at 3:36 PM
We had our side-by-side concert with the Warren Central High School Orchestra on Wednesday night, and it was fantastic. The WCHSO is a very good group, and really only needed the Philharmonic's help because they are a *string* orchestra and needed the winds and brass for "Jupiter." So, we string players mostly just tagged along. ;-) It was a great experience, though. I hope we do it again next year. It is just so great to see how good and enthusiastic these young people are. (Most of them play better than I do!)

The next concert I do is with the Athenaeum Pops Orchestra at Robin Run Village (a retirement village) on October 10. Then on October 12 is the first Phil concert at Pike Performing Arts Center. I'm looking forward to both. We're playing such awesome music.

First concert of the year

We've just had our second rehearsal for the new season of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis. Being a second year player is so much less intimidating than being a rookie. We have a few new faces, have lost a few of the old faces, but it's still an amazing group of amateurs.

Our first concert is a series of "patriotic" pieces in celebration of the upcoming elections. The program looks like this:

The Star Spangled Banner
Washington Post March (Sousa)
Finlandia (Sibelius)
Sarka (Smetana)
Variations for Orchestra (Webern)
Lieutenant Kije Suite (Prokofieff)
Presidential Polonaise (Sousa)
The Stars and Stripes Forever (Sousa)

A nice mix of music.

In addition to the regularly scheduled concert on October 12th (where we'll be playing the above program) we have been asked to perform a sort of "side by side" concert with one of the local high school orchestras on September 24. We're only playing one piece (thank goodness, since we'll have a total of three rehearsals, two with the HS orch, before the concert). For that we're playing "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" from "The Planets" by Holst.

It's looking like it will be a very exciting (and busy) year. One positive as the weather turns colder and the leaves begin to fall off the trees...
