Rhythm Games - Introducing Rhythms
March 30, 2013 at 2:27 PM
Rhythm Cards are a great way to introduce rhythms to your students. If you are not able to find a set they are very easy to make on your own. In this video I discuss the rhythm cards and how to incorporate them into group lessons via rhythm games with the children. They are great for all instruments and not only the violin. Have an assortment of instruments around for the children to use when reading the rhythm cards. You can easily divide up the group into two teams and have a friendly competition between the two or have the two teams do rhythm duets when they get more advanced and confident in reading the rhythms. Currently here in Gabrovo, Bulgaria I introduced the children to rhythms and found words in Bulgarian to match the rhythms. So if English is not your first language find words in your first language that match the rhythms. In the past I had many boy students so I used Green Bay Packers for two quarter notes and two eighth notes (very fitting living in Wisconsin and the boys were packer fans). Use whatever words the children would enjoy:) Enjoy, be creative and Have fun with Rhythm Games.
Friday, I taught my Bulgarian children music class and we used the boomwhackers for rhythm exercises and they love them.
Get your own set of Boomwhackers!!
Music books to use with your boomwhackers:)
In this video I demonstrate other Musical instruments to introduce rhythms :)Remember you don't need to buy anything to practice rhythms. Take a spoon and pot from the kitchen, put rice in a small tupperware container and you have a maracca. Your body is a musical instrument - jump up and down or clap your hands to the rhythm. Have the children clap each others hands:) Many activities can be used to practice rhythms.
