Tchaikovsky in the summer

June 12, 2009 18:35

Summer is almost here!  Does your orchestra play during the summer?  I'm excited for this summer since I get to play Tchaikovsky 6.  I looked at the music and sadly, the 2nd violin part does not contain that beautiful melody.

By the way, you veterans out there, how difficult is this piece (2nd violin part)?  Compare to say, the Vivaldi Seasons (not solo, orchestra part that is).

Help me decide which Yo Yo Ma concert to see?

June 9, 2009 18:30

Yo Yo Ma will be coming to San Francisco for 10 days Jan 2010!!!  I've seen him performed once when I was in college and would love to see him again now that I'm a violinist!

What would you pick?

The question is, do i want to see him:

1.  Recital Yo Yo Ma with Emmanual Ax

Program

Schumann
Adagio and Allegro

Schumann
Five Pieces in Folk Style

Peter Lieberson
SFS Commission (World premiere)

Chopin
Polonaise brillante

Schumann
Fantasy Pieces

Chopin
Cello Sonata

2.  MTT with Yo Yo Ma

The brilliance of cellist Yo-Yo Ma shines in a program that features two dazzling masterpieces. Brahms’s Concerto for Violin and Cello displays the lavish harmonies of the Romantic era, while Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto—written in 1966—is a superb example of the composer’s late style.

Violinist is:  Colin Jacobsen

3.  Yo Yo Ma Chamber music

Program to be announced
