I have an adult beginner who is learning to play her father's violin. When she and her brother were young, they performed similar antics on the violin. They left a huge crack on the top of the violin and other, smaller bits of damage. Almost miraculously, a local luthier repaired the violin, and it sounds very good. Oh... OUCH. And ditto on Pauline's story.
