Thank you SO much, Caeli - the Pacifica Quartet teaches here at Illinois and Mischa Mischakoff's daughter plays in local ensembles, so this is very touching to me. Her son, Brandon, has the love and respect of all his students (the studio Facebook group is Brandon Vamos Changed My Life), and this is a little window into how that came to be.

Caeli, Almita Vamos comes across very down to earth and wise. Doesn’t she have the greatest smile?!
Great report and a lot of good questions you asked her. Thanks so much!

I love the fortune cookie story.
George and I were destined in much the same way, only it was a deck of cards with the 50 states on them. Around the dining hall table at camp, the cards were shuffled and my home state (OK) was drawn. Everyone thought it was funny and shouted, "Ooh, Emily's state!" The cards were shuffled, and Oklahoma was drawn yet again, much to everyone's shock. "Oklahoma!" Shuffle. The next card: "Alaska!" Freaky! What next? The cards were shuffled once more, very ominously, and then the last card was drawn: "Pennsylvania!!!" Everyone was watching. There was no question after that, since George was the only one from PA.
And we lived happily ever after. The end. :)

Awesome. Inspiring.
And Rachel Barton Pine's notes on Scottish music was equally cool--a study on synergy.
