Just read back on your blog to find out how that happened.....
Wow, I know exactly how you felt at that moment Richard .....when I lost my grip on mine while trying to move the dang pegs to tune (they were extremely tight)....I just sat there and stared at it sitting on the floor...neck completely removed from the body. What an AWFUL feeling !!
The sooner you get it repaired the better. Make sure you have it done by a reputable luthier who guarentees their work. I originally brought mine to a "guitar" shop to have it fixed for $50.00..and they glued it back on with carpententers glue ! (GAH!!) I didn't know any better then, but I do now. If I had taken it to a luthier to begin with it would have been alot less expensive to repair. After a year the finger board started shifting closer to the top and I had to get it repaired properly...(cost me over $600.00...took me 6 months to save !)
I am ALWAYS VERY careful about where I lay my violin down...every time..even if only for a moment. It only takes a second for something awful to happen !!

Those pictures are so sad, Richard. Make sure that you get it repaired properly. Take it to a few different luthiers for estimates. I'd be suspicious of anyone who claims to be able to fix it for $100-$200.

One year ago, my bow broke and I got white hairs over my strings.

It's just an hour or two of work unless he's invisibly mending a Stradivarius. But like all luthiers, before you leave your instrument make sure they aren't crazy.

I should have said "But as with all luthiers..."
