For better or for Worse?

November 27, 2006 18:22

Well I just found out today tat there are only 3 Tubas (including me) auditioning for All county! (Orchestra year, they accept 2.) Which at first I thought was good. But then I thought about it more for a minute. If I win a seat that would be great, but what if I don't. I would be the ONE person that did not make it. I would much rather be one of the 10 people not making it rather than the ONE!

Chicago Trip.... Canceled? :(

November 22, 2006 07:39

Well the Chicago trip I was supposed to go on in April got canceled. I am somewhat sad and somewhat happy that this happened. I am sad because: I love competitions, I wanted to go to chicago, and I haven't been on a vacation in like 2 years. But I am happy because: I would have had to spend my 16th birthday money for the trip ($500+Spending money) and Now I can get the Laptop I have wanted for years! Also it was during one of my performances.

I went to the smith opera house last night for rehearsal, my first time. It was awesome, though it was recently restored, and this is a giant rainbow on one side, and it looks so out of place.

The E string Saga continues?

November 14, 2006 18:10

Well as many of you know, my E string has corroded to death. So I did the obvious thing and replaced it. But I made the mistake of sending my parents to get my string. I gave them a list, and they went to a GUITAR store! Well they told me I got dominants, but the store only sold one Kind of Violin string, and they didn't have any envolopes, when I came home I found it sitting in a guitar string envolope. I opened it and I found what looked like an E string. But As soon as I unraveled it I had my doubts. Here are my questions...
1. Do Domonaint E strings come in Loop end?
2. Should the string be over 3 feet long? (it wraps around my peg no less then 27 times, I was suprised by this.)
3. And there is no thread at either end of the string. Is this normal.

Thanks, this is the first time I have traveled out of Corelli, red label or sensicore.

But I wantOne That works!

November 11, 2006 13:46

There are small ones, big ones, flashy ones that give you a laser light show, inconsistent ones, and then the just plain expensive ones. All of these metronomes serve a different purpose:

Small ones are portable, good for the teacher or performer on the move. Usually cheap and consistent and durable, but so easy to loose, as I found out the hard way! (This is the type I use.)

Big ones usually have some cool design or something, and for some reason, as I found out, are sometimes inconsistent, especially since many of them feature a pendulum that keeps time and eventually slows down.

The flashy ones are my favorite for looks (but not functionality), but they usually cost more than $60 and, in my opinion are a waste of money. They distract the musician from the task at hand and most of them also fit into the inconsistent category also.

And the expensive ones, >$100, well I don't know what is so special about them!

When buying a metronome you must consider other factors as well, is easy to use? Is there a digital display or a dial in which you must turn to get the right speed? Is there a great variety of speeds? And does it fit your budget?

I have noticed that a lot of student and amateur musicians a like do not have metronomes, I have been encouraging everyone one I know that is a musician to get a metronome. They will not believe the improvement that comes out of their playing.

What in the world happened to my E string?

November 9, 2006 12:26

I have no clue what happened. My E string, I have noticed lately, has become oxodized or something. It has a black crust sortof around the string, that I can scrap off. Anyone have any clue what it is?

So much technology.... so little time...

November 3, 2006 18:01

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for an audio recorder. Something cheap, just to make low quality CD's and post on the internet.
Thanks,
Richard
