One time I was reading about Gettysburg. I was surprised to learn that the number of deaths in that single battle, which lasted only a couple of days, was the same as the whole American losses in the Vietnam war.

Oops, it's total casualties vs. fatalities that are the same. Thanks for clearing that up for me... Still about 1/6 the number though.

We here in Alabama were deprived of that holiday. I am a second generation Yankee Carpetbagger, so I will pass on commenting. For anyone interested, Tony Horwitz wrote a marvelous book called "Confederates in the Attic: Dispatched from the Unfinished Civil War".

The strangest thing of all...when my daughter was attempting to deal with US government officials in Johannesburg, South Africa a few years ago, the office in Jo'burg was closed for Confederate Memorial Day...go figure.
